In today’s global herbal ingredient and dietary supplement market, accurate plant identification requires more than a single analytical method. Led by renowned microscopist, Kirsten Tripplett, LeafWorks offers expert macroscopic and high-magnification microscopic botanical identification services as a complement to our genomic platform or as a rigorous stand-alone method.

Using authenticated herbarium reference materials and pharmacopoeial monographs, our microscopy services evaluate qualitative plant characteristics — including tissue architecture, vascular elements, crystal structures, surface hairs, and organ-specific morphology — to determine identity, detect plant part, and assess overall material quality. Features such as plant part or non-biological contaminants are not detectable by DNA alone and can be especially valuable for confirming identity requirements for 21 CFR 111 as well as FDA guidelines.

Our botanical microscopy services are led by Kirsten Tripplett, Ph.D., whose decades of anatomical expertise and extensive dietary supplement industry experience bring rare taxonomic depth to modern ingredient verification. LeafWorks® Botanical Microscopy & Morphological Identification services provide qualitative plant identity verification using macroscopic and high-magnification microscopic techniques. This method evaluates anatomical and morphological characters — including tissue organization, vascular structures, trichomes, crystals, starch granules, sclereids, fibers, and other diagnostic cellular features — to determine botanical identity and plant part.

Microscopy can be deployed as a stand-alone identity method or as part of a discounted orthogonal testing strategy alongside genomic analysis. It is particularly valuable for:

  • Confirming correct plant organ (root, leaf, bark, seed, flower, fruit)
  • Detecting adulterants, substitutes, and foreign plant material

WHO IS OUR MICROSCOPIST PERFORMING YOUR SERVICE?

Our microscopist is a renowned expert in microscopy, Kirsten Tripplett.  

Kirsten Tripplett, Ph.D., is a seasoned botanist, a recognized dietary supplement and pharmaceutical industry subject matter expert in microscopic botanical identification of medicinal herbs and adulterants, and has substantial experience in compendial method development and validation, 21 CFR 111 and FDA GMP compliance requirements and R&D ingredient substantiation for new finished products. Kirsten has FDA audit experience and many years of scientific publication reviewing for industry and academia behind her. 

In her previous position as Principal Scientist, Quality Control, at Traditional Medicinals, Kirsten managed all aspects of macroscopic and microscopic identification and assessment of incoming botanical  ingredients, and was responsible for 100+ herb identifications and verifications, and introduced analysis of potential adulterants and contaminants. She also established and curated a major reference collection of authenticated medicinal plants and potential adulterants, as well as an herbarium. She worked closely with TM’s phytochemical identification specialist on testing and method development, and collaborated closely with the R&D department on ingredient substantiation, specification development and setting testing standards. Kirsten's methods helped keep Traditional Medicinals stay in compliance with FDA’s 21 CFR and GMP regulations. 

During her tenure, Kirsten developed new microscopic identification methods for 9 botanical ingredients lacking pharmacopoeial descriptions; and fulfilled requests by the United States Pharmacopoeia to develop new monograph macro- and microscopic identification methods for 2 widely consumed and globally significant South American medicinal plants. Kirsten and a close colleague routinely presented research and results at the International Conference on the Science of Botanicals in Oxford, MS, which is supported by a cooperative agreement between the National Center for Natural Product Research and the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Kirsten continues to be a routine reviewer for the Botanical Adulteration Prevention Program (ABC-NCNPR-AHPA) and other related industry and academic research publications.
